Wellington – handy for the ferry
We’ll happily meet you in Wellington and this can often be a convenient place to start your campervan hire if you’re concentrating on just the North or South Island as it’s smack bang in the middle of the country.
The Interislander and Bluebridge ferries both operate from Wellington.
Wellington Airport is a little busy for handovers and navigating that area in a campervan is not ideal so we like to meet at Evans Bay Marina – a 5 to 10 minute Uber away and a great spot to meet and introduce you to your campervan.
Where to stay in and around Wellington
If you’re planning on spending a night or two in or on the edge of Wellington then we know and recommend these holiday parks:
If you’re wanting to hit the city then Evans Bay Marina is a free camping spot on the edge of Wellington city and an easy bus or Uber ride away from the action. Get there early as it fills up fast!
If Evans Bay Marina is full then for vans of our size (all our campervans are 7 metres long) the inner city of Wellington doesn’t really offer much else. You’re best to head out to Petone to Wellington Top 10.
Things to do in Wellington
Wellington has some of the coolest cafes and restaurants – and many of these are found in the Cuba Street area. Just find a park on the edge of that area and wander around.
Oriental Parade is another nice spot to hang out but you’ll find parking spots there that fit a 7-metre campervan so it’s perfect for parking up and then walking back to Te Papa, along the waterfront or further into Lambton Quay or the inner city.
