To be certified as "self-contained" a campervan needs to have the following:

• storage of sufficient fresh water for it's occupants for 3 days,
• a sink connected to a sealed waste water tank
• a black waste water tank
• a hose to empty these tanks
• a sealable rubbish bin
• a toilet

Look for the valid certificate on the windscreen and the blue sticker on the back of the van.

If you're a couple and you can keep showers short and sharp (or better still take a swim in a river, lake or the sea) then we reckon 3 days is easy. Solar panels keep the battery charged and the LPG (propane) lasts well for the cooking and water heating but it's the fresh water you need to think about conserving the most!

Can you handle a little spontaneity? Maybe driving about for a little longer to find the right spot? Doing a little extra research about a place before you arrive? Most importantly, can you deal with arriving to find there's no spot left and having to drive on? The risk is you may miss out. The reward is a primo spot for free!
